The London Sci-Fi Anime All-Nighter!

So we're back from the All Nighter! Four tired bunnies here. A quick rundown of some of the highlights:

The lineup was Appleseed Ex Machina, then The Girl Who Leapt Through Time; this was followed by Tekonkinkreet or however the damned thing's spelt, and finally Vexille. This lead to an awesome first half followed by a slightly flat second half; Vexille was very much a poor man's Appleseed, and as I slept through the single most important moment in the film, it was fairly meaningless to me. Tekonwhatsit was odd; Kat expected it to be in the style of the awesome Dead Leaves, while I expected something more like Paprika; we were both disappointed, in the end, as it came across as a surreal view of two children's lives in a small district. And, for some reason, their ninja powers and ability to dodge bullets.

Appleseed Ex Machina was an awesome sequel to the original Appleseed, which I found slightly boring. The animation style was, to me, reminiscent of the game 'XIII', which combined flat comic-book art with a 3d battle engine, rather stylishly for the time. The characters in Appleseed had an odd habit of flattening as your perspective pulled further away from them, and judicious use of black lines to delineate the edges of some blocks of colours only added to the illusion. Beyond the physical, it had a good pace, it had a good storyline, intrigue, mystery and action all mixed in, and as we watched the subtitled version (on all four films, sadly) we weren't disappoint by poor voice acting. Watch out for the brief portrait of Hitler in his later years, slightly chubby and with a smaller mustache... look, just watch it. You can't miss it.

For me, the top film was The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. We laughed; we, well, not cried, but it was a close thing. The characters were so deep and yet the light humour was present throughout, leaving us feeling cared-for, up until about twenty minutes before the end. I caught myself gripping the arms of the chair and staring open-mouthed at the final few scenes, as personal issues and loose ends were tied up... you really felt for the main character, and in the final mix, it is well worth it. Beg, steal, borrow, buy this film.

Other highlights; Ok, so I'm opposed to EA in general, but they own Command & Conquer, and I was able to spend a pleasant hour testing out the new addon, 'Kain's Wrath', on a computer on the lower ground floor. It's not out yet, as far as I know, but it's awesome. I mean, awesome. I also 'won' a Kain head-bobbler thing, and it speaks too! Even now I see his head wobbling back and forward as I type. Made. Of. Win.

Two people in full costume probably round the highlights off for me; one as an Alien, on as a Predator. Also made of win. And foam, and fur in one case.

It might interest you to know that I've written up a loose storyline for our next manga presentation. Ideally, I want to try and have two manga on te go, and we've got Rising Stars of Manga to think about also, but there's a couple of major potholes down that road: Exams and coursework. For both of us.

Anyway, to keep you company for a little bit, here is the new Tiny Sides Wide. Enjoy!
